Cyprus: A Historically Rich Island Divided into Distinct Territories

Cyprus is a Mediterranean island with a rich and complex history shaped by diverse civilizations and geopolitical influences.

Today, the island is divided into two main political entities: the Republic of Cyprus, which controls the southern part of the island and is a member of the European Union, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which governs the northern part and is recognized only by Turkey.

Separating the two regions is the United Nations Buffer Zone (Green Line), a demilitarized area monitored and controlled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

In addition, parts of the island remain under British sovereignty. The areas of Akrotiri(in the south) and Dhekelia(in the southeast) are designated as Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs)of the United Kingdom. These territories are retained by the UK for military and strategic purposes.

In september 2024 we visited with the IBRG expedition 'Cybex-24 the Isle of Cyprus.

Tripoints on Cyprus

Although the tripoints involving the TRNC can be debated, it is important to note that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) — also referred to as the Turkish Cypriot State — is a disputed entity. As a result, its borders remain politically sensitive.

Based on the current maps and border overviews (thanks to Barry), we can identify five tripoints on Cyprusif all governing entities on the island are counted separately. These include the Republic of Cyprus, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.

The concept of Cyprus tripoints

highlights the island’s unique geopolitical landscape, where international borders, buffer zones, and sovereign territories intersect within a relatively small geographic area.

During Cybex-24, Eva, Barry, Jesper, Steen, and I successfully visited Tripoint No. 1 and Tripoint No. 4, documenting these rare border intersections and exploring their geographical and political significance.
