Research at Col du Somport: Bordermarkers on the Spain–France border in the Pyrenees

Today, we carried out a small research trip to Col du Somport, a mountain pass located on the Spain–France borderat an altitude of 1,632 metres. During this visit, we explored the border crossing and searched for the boundary markers ESFR305, ESFR305 bis, ESFR306, and ESFR307. Thanks to the coordinates and photographs published by Eefon his website, we were able to locate all four border markers.

Col du Somportis the mountain pass situated above the Somport Tunnel. This so-called border tunnelis an important transport link connecting Spain and France through the Pyrenees.

The tunnel is 8.6 kilometres long, with the international border located 5,759 metres from the Spanish entranceand 2,849 metres from the French entrance.

According to information provided by some AI sources, the border inside the tunnel is marked by a European Union flagdisplayed on the tunnel wall. During our visit, however, we were unable to find this flag. We did, however, discover a commemorative plaque installed at the French entrance of the tunnel, highlighting the significance of this international connection.

This exploration of Col du Somport and its border markers proved to be an enjoyable first introduction to the Pyrenees, a region where spectacular landscapes, history, and international cooperation come together.

Walking along the Spain–France border near Bourg-Madame: Historic boundary markers #477 and #478

Today, I completed a short walk along the Spain–France border (ESFR) near the old N154 road bridge, located north of Bourg-Madame, France. This area offers an interesting glimpse into the historic border infrastructure between Spain and France, including several well-preserved boundary markers.

On the old bridge, I located both border markers #477, which mark the international boundary at this crossing point. I also found both corresponding stones for the next marker in sequence, boundary marker #478 (ESFR).

Marker 478 on the French side is situated on private property with restricted access. A board was placed in front of the marker, making identification slightly more difficult. However, the top of the stone remained clearly visible, allowing its position and significance to be confirmed.

This section of the France–Spain border near Bourg-Madame is a fascinating location for anyone interested in historic border markers, international boundaries, and local heritage sites in the Pyrenees region. The surviving stones provide a tangible connection to the long-established frontier between the two countries and highlight the historical importance of this crossing along the old N154 route.

Municipal tripoint

It is interesting to note that border marker #477 does not only mark the international border between France and Spain, but also serves as a unique tripoint. Located in France, BM 477 is the boundary point between the French municipalities of Bourg-Madame and Ur. At this exact location, both municipalities meet the border with Spain and the Spanish town of Puigcerdà.

While it is not a traditional tripoint between three different countries—the type of border landmark I have visited many times—it remains a noteworthy geographical point. As a meeting point of two French municipalities and one Spanish municipality, this border marker holds particular significance in terms of local administrative boundaries and cross-border geography.
